# Indie developers and freelancers: stop hitting your AI agent's usage limit mid-task

> Solo developers lose hours to usage limits and surprise bills. Tokenade trims logs and file reads before your AI agent sees them, on your own machine.

You pay for your AI agent out of your own pocket, and it stops you in the middle of a task: usage limit reached, come back in three hours. Or it keeps going and the bill climbs faster than you can follow.

Most of those tokens did not go into code. They went into logs and files the agent read in full.

## What you deal with every day

Solo developers describe the same handful of problems, and they are mostly about running out, not about quality.

### The limit lands in the middle of work

On Cursor's forum, a developer explained how he stays productive: a Claude Code subscription "which has a limit that refreshes every 5 hours and it usually lasts me about 2 hours", then Cursor, then another CLI once those run dry.

His summary: his "cursor accounts are pretty much dead after I hit my rate limits because the direct API costs are too expensive for a solo dev that's in the middle of production" ([Cursor forum, August 2025](https://forum.cursor.com/t/cursor-is-expensive/126446)).

Stacking subscriptions to dodge limits is common. It also means paying three vendors for one person's work.

### The weekly allowance just got smaller

On September 14, 2026, Anthropic ended a temporary 50% boost to Claude Code's weekly limits and replaced it with a permanent 25% raise over the old baseline.

Measured against what people had over the summer, that is "a net ~17% cut from current capacity" ([explainx.ai, figures as of August 30, 2026](https://www.explainx.ai/blog/anthropic-claude-code-limits-17-percent-cut-september-2026-august-2026)). If your week was already tight, it is tighter now.

### Pay-as-you-go is a surprise you see afterwards

When you switch to per-token billing to keep working, the cost shows up after the fact. "I just used cursor for like an hour and it cost me over $17!!!" wrote another developer in the same thread.

One reviewer who has paid for a top-tier plan for 14 months lists, among the reasons to upgrade, a weekly cap that "is costing you billable hours" ([theplanettools.ai, verified July 23, 2026](https://theplanettools.ai/blog/claude-code-max-x20-worth-it-14-month-verdict-2026)).

### Client secrets sit next to the code

Freelancers work in other people's repositories. A WordPress freelancer with ten years of practice advises blocking `wp-config.php`, "database dumps, payment logs, private exports, API keys, and client documents" from the agent ([rikidesk.com, May 18, 2026](https://rikidesk.com/claude-code-wordpress-automation-workflow-freelancers/)). One stray `cat .env` and a client key is in the transcript.

## What Tokenade changes for a solo developer

Tokenade sits between your AI agent and its tools, on your computer. It does not change how you prompt. It changes how much the agent has to read to do what you asked.

- **Build, test and `git` output is folded.** A failing test run comes back as the failures and their locations, not every passing line around them. The full output stays on disk if the agent asks for it.
- **Files can be read as skeletons.** With `tokenade skeleton`, the agent sees signatures and structure first, then opens the one function it needs instead of the whole file.
- **Search answers by meaning.** `tokenade semantic` returns the passages that answer a question, so the agent stops opening files one by one to find where something lives.
- **Re-reads are deduplicated.** When the agent reopens a file it already read in this session, it gets a short reference instead of a second full copy.
- **Credentials are masked.** Keys and tokens Tokenade recognises are replaced before the output reaches the agent.

The effect on a limit is direct: fewer tokens per turn means more turns before the reset. On the public THOL benchmark, long sessions with Tokenade cost [39% less](https://tokenade.net/en/thol) than the same sessions without it. Long sessions are exactly where a solo developer hits the wall.

It also follows you when you switch. `tokenade install` wires Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot CLI, OpenCode, Cline and other agents in one pass, so the agent you fall back on after a limit is trimmed too.

`tokenade gain` shows what was saved, compactor by compactor, with measured rows kept apart from estimates. You can check the effect on your own work instead of trusting a claim.

## What stays on your computer

Compaction runs on your machine. Your code, the files the agent reads, your prompts and command arguments are not sent to Tokenade's servers.

What is sent is a usage row per compaction (token counts, which compactor acted, which agent, the program name such as `git`), because that is how the plan is metered. The full list of fields is in [What Tokenade sends and stores](https://tokenade.net/en/docs/privacy-telemetry).

Be clear about the limits. Tokenade masks credentials it recognises; it does not hide your client's name, customer records or business data. Your agent still sends what it reads to its model provider, as it does today. Keep your deny rules for secret files in place: masking is a second layer, not a replacement.

> Make the same plan last longer: Tokenade folds the logs and file reads your agent burns its limit on.

> Install: `npm install -g @tokenade/cli && tokenade install && tokenade login` — or let your agent do it: https://tokenade.net/install.md

## Setting it up

Three commands, about two minutes. Details are in the [install guide](https://tokenade.net/en/docs/install).

1. **Install the CLI:** `npm install -g @tokenade/cli`
2. **Wire your agents:** `tokenade install` detects the agents on your machine and adds the hooks or plugins each one needs.
3. **Log in:** `tokenade login` links the machine to your account in the browser. Machines are unlimited, so your laptop and desktop count once. After the 7-day free trial you pay 1% of the value saved; details on the [pricing page](https://tokenade.net/en/pricing).

Then keep working as usual and run `tokenade gain` after a day.

## FAQ

### Will Tokenade stop me from hitting the limit altogether?

No. It lowers the tokens each turn costs, so the same allowance covers more work, and the limit arrives later. A heavy week can still exhaust it. Watch `tokenade gain` to see how much room it bought you.

### Does it slow my agent down or break my workflow?

Hooks never block the agent. If Tokenade fails, the agent receives the normal output and keeps going. You can bypass it for one command with `tokenade raw`, or switch the hooks off with `TOKENADE_HOOK_DISABLED=1`.

### Does my client's code go to your servers?

No. Compaction happens locally and only usage counts are sent to meter your plan. File contents, paths, prompts and command arguments stay on your machine.

### I switch between Claude Code, Codex and Cursor. Do I need three setups?

No. One `tokenade install` wires every supported agent it finds on the machine, each through the strongest channel that agent offers.
