How do I install Tokenade?

Three commands. npm install -g @tokenade/cli installs the CLI, tokenade install registers it with the agent it detects on your machine (MCP servers plus hooks), and tokenade login activates your account through the browser. There is no config file to write and nothing to add to your prompts.

Do I need an account to try it?

Accepted Answer

No. Every machine gets a one-time grant of 10 million tokens with no account and no card, which is enough to see whether the savings are real on your own work. Creating a free account raises that to a monthly allowance that resets, on unlimited machines. See the pricing page for the current plans.

Which agents does it work with?

Accepted Answer

Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Kilo Code, Windsurf, OpenCode, Cline, Roo Code, Aider, Hermes and OpenClaw. tokenade detect prints the agent it found on your machine, and tokenade install --only <agent> targets a specific one if you run several. Anything speaking the MCP protocol can be pointed at it manually. Linux, macOS and Windows are all supported.

How do I know it is working?

tokenade gain prints your cumulative token savings, and tokenade dashboard gives a screenshot-ready overview of the same numbers. The web dashboard breaks them down by day and by model once you have logged in. If something looks wrong, tokenade healthcheck diagnoses the install and tells you what is not wired up.

Will it change the answers my agent gives?

It changes what your agent reads, not what it is asked. Tokenade replaces whole-file reads with structure-first reads and semantic search, compresses noisy command output, and loads MCP tool manifests only when they are used. The agent sees less irrelevant context, which is usually what makes long sessions degrade in the first place.

Does my code leave my machine?

The compaction runs locally — your source is processed on your own machine, not uploaded for analysis. What reaches our servers is usage accounting: how many tokens were saved, on which model, so your dashboard and quota are accurate. Tokenade is source-available under MIT, so you can read exactly what it sends.

How do I update or remove it?

tokenade upgrade self-updates in place and keeps your existing agent wiring. To remove it, tokenade uninstall undoes the integration and wipes the local ~/.tokenade data — run it with --dry-run first if you want to see what it will touch. Nothing is left behind in your projects, because nothing was ever written into them.
