If you point an AI agent at a folder of annual reports, broker notes and Excel exports, you have probably watched the usage bar jump before the analysis even starts. Every page of a PDF and every row of a workbook is billed as tokens, and the agent often reads the same file more than once in a session.
Tokenade turns those files into compact text on your computer before the agent sees them, so the same work fits in more of your plan.
This page is for analysts, FP&A people and accountants who already work with an AI agent that runs on their computer: Claude Code (including the Code tab of Claude Desktop), Codex, Cursor and similar. Figures below were read on the cited pages on 2026-10-15.
What you deal with every day
Finance work arrives as documents, and documents are the most expensive thing you can hand a model. Four problems come back again and again.
PDFs cost more than they look
Anthropic's own documentation says a PDF page "typically uses 1,500–3,000 tokens per page depending on content density", and each page is also converted to an image billed on top (Claude PDF support, read 2026-10-15). A 200-page annual report is a large share of a context window before you ask a single question.
Analysts know the format problem well. One finance automation writer puts it plainly: "Financial professionals live in a world of PDFs", from CIMs to broker statements and regulatory filings (AnalystDev, 2026-02-08).
Spreadsheets get read row by row, again and again
A general ledger export or a budget workbook can hold tens of thousands of rows. When the agent dumps them into the conversation, they stay there and are sent again on every turn. A developer who built a spreadsheet connector for Claude summed it up: "Returning raw rows blows your token budget on data the model has to re-read on every turn" (excel-live-mcp README, read 2026-10-15).
Your limit is shared with everything else
Anthropic lists "file attachment size" and "current conversation length" among the factors that use up your plan (Usage limit best practices, updated 2026-09-22). Claude and Claude Code also draw from the same allowance (Claude for Lawyers, 2026-09-09, citing the Help Center).
A heavy morning on 10-Ks leaves less for the rest of the week. How the windows work is explained in Claude usage limits explained.
Costs are now watched from above
On company plans, spend is managed centrally. Anthropic publishes a consumption guide that walks Enterprise admins through spend caps and model choice (Claude Enterprise consumption guide, 2026-10-07). If your team has a cap, the analyst who reads raw PDFs hits it first.
What Tokenade changes for finance work
Tokenade sits between your AI agent and the files and tools it uses. It does not change your workbooks or your prompts. It changes what the model receives.
- PDFs, Word and PowerPoint become text. When the agent opens a
.pdf,.docxor.pptx, Tokenade returns the extracted text instead of page images and file internals. Scanned pages go through OCR whentesseractis installed. - Workbooks become readable tables.
.xlsx,.xlsand.xlsbfiles are returned as compact text, and CSV exports are compacted by format. - Ask the file, don't read it.
tokenade read 10-K.pdf --prompt "segment revenue, going concern, debt maturities"returns only the passages that answer, each under its own heading, in one call (how it works). - No paying twice for the same file. When the agent re-reads a file it already saw, Tokenade spots the repeat.
- Large tool results get folded. If you plug market-data or accounting connectors into your agent over MCP, their long results are folded, with the full output kept on your computer if the agent needs it.
- Savings you can check.
tokenade gainshows what was saved, row by row, with estimates kept apart.
On our public benchmark, Tokenade makes long agent sessions 39% cheaper. Long sessions are exactly what a quarter-end review or a due diligence pack turns into.
What stays on your computer
Compaction runs on the computer where you work. Your files, prompts and figures are not sent to Tokenade's servers. What Tokenade does send is one small usage row per compaction (token counts, which compactor ran, which agent), used to meter your plan. The full list of fields is in What Tokenade sends and stores.
Two limits to keep in mind. The compacted text still goes to your AI provider, as it would without Tokenade, so your firm's policy on that provider still applies. And Tokenade masks credentials it recognises, such as API keys and tokens, but it does not remove client names, account numbers in prose or deal details.
Setting it up
You need an AI agent that runs on your computer. Claude Code, the Code tab of Claude Desktop, Codex and Cursor all work. Claude Cowork is not supported, and in the Claude Desktop chat only MCP results are optimised (compatibility).
- Install the command line tool:
npm install -g @tokenade/cli. - Run
tokenade install. It finds your agents and connects to each one. - Run
tokenade loginto link the computer to your account (7-day free trial), then work as usual and checktokenade gain.
Full instructions are in Install Tokenade. The price is on the pricing page.
FAQ
Does Tokenade work with Claude in Excel or Claude Cowork?
No. The Excel add-in runs inside Excel and Cowork runs in an isolated environment, and neither lets a local tool sit in between. Tokenade works when an agent on your computer, such as Claude Code or Codex, opens the files. Anything it saves there leaves more of your shared Claude allowance for the rest.
Will the agent lose numbers when a PDF is turned into text?
The text is extracted from the file, not rewritten, so figures in the text layer are kept. Tables come back as text, and charts that exist only as images are not read. If the agent needs the full output of a folded result, it can retrieve it from your computer.
Do my client files leave my computer?
Not to Tokenade. Compaction is local and only usage counts are sent. The text your agent works with still goes to your AI provider, exactly as it would without Tokenade.
I am not a developer. Can I still install it?
Yes, if you already use an agent such as Claude Code in the Claude Desktop Code tab. Installation is three commands, and tokenade install does the wiring. You can also see where other document-heavy roles stand on the document work overview.

Ranked #1 on the Token-Harness Optimizer Leaderboard. Zero config.
Tokenade cuts the token bill of AI agents: one install, zero config, and it trims what your agent sends to the model.
